Rocking a month till we graduate
and I still have things to say
I noticed recently, that my flirtatious patterns are quite ironic. I can flirt with a girl whom I don't like without any problem. However, once I actually start to like a girl, it's hard for me to actually flirt with them. It must be in human nature to feel this way.
I'll try to explain it, if not to you, then to myself. When I like a girl, I feel like I have a lot to lose if they don't like me back. Because of this fear of loss, I think of my actions before I perform them, often losing chances I normally would have taken.
When I flirt with a girl whom I don't like, I have nothing to lose. Because I have nothing to lose if things go sour, I can flirt with them as much as I like. This could be another reason why a lot of girls and guys are "led on". I know I've led on a few girls in my life. I've also been led on in my life.
Even with this in mind, when I think about it, all the girls whom i've grown to like before becoming real close with them haven't ended well. Freshman year, Sophmore year, Junior year, and partially senior year.
It's really fascinating how the brain works. Maybe I should become a neurologist, or a biomedical engineer.

Vilannelle, Terza rima, sestenet
A vilanelle is a 19 line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain. There are two refrains and two repeating rhymes, with the first and third line of the first tercet repeated alternately until the last stanze, which includes both repeated lines.
A Terza Rima is a rhyming verse stanza form that consists of an interlocking three-line rhyme scheme. It was first used by Alighieri.
A sestenet is a group of six lines of poetry.
Here is an example of a vilanelle:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night, Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night, Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

THE ART OF POETRY
"ARS POETICA"
*QUEUE THE BEAT*
THERE ONCE WAS A MAN
WHO OWNED HIS OWN LAND
HAD A WIFE WHO SIMPLY COULD NOT UNDERSTAND
HE HAD AMBITIONS AND DREAMS
THAT HAD BEEN WIPED CLEAN
HE WITHDREW FROM HIS CAREER TO PURSUE HIS GREED
HE HAD NOWHERE TO RUN
SO HE JUST SAT DOWN
PULLED OUT SOME PAPER AND HAD JUST WROTE DOWN
HE FOUND HIS ESCAPE
IN THE DIMENSIONS OF HIS MIND
NOBODY ELSE HAD UNDERSTOOD HIS KIND
AND WHEN HE PASSED ON
HE LEFT US THIS SONG
TO SHOW US THAT POETRY WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON

3rd Quarter Reflection
Curriculum:
I've always a been a math and science type of guy. Going into life, I plan on being an engineer, so English classes haven't held as much personal importance as the math and science courses. Despite this, I do love this class. I love the slam poems, and other presentations we have to make, because it encourages us to think for ourselves. The debates hold a similar atmosphere. In many classes, one can get by just doing the work, and writing down what you're told to write down. This class really encourages us to think for ourselves, that our opinions mean a significant amount. I'm sure that this thought process will help me in college and in life as a leader.
I only have a quarter left in senior year. This has to be one of my fastest years yet. Like, I swear I was just being introduced to my Senior Year AP classes a week ago. Now, it's almost April and I have not even two months left in the curriculum. While I do have some regrets, I am so glad with how my high school career has developed over the past four years. Without those past experiences I wouldn't be who I am today, so I have no regrets.

Waiting for Godot and Nihilism, Exestentialism, and absurdity
Waiting for Godot exhibits many examples of existentialism, Nihilism, and absuirdity.
Nihilism is the belief that nothing really exists. All values are baseless and nothing can truly be known. A nihilist believes in nothing, has no loyalties and no purpose, other than the impulse to destroy what we do know. There are several examples of nihilism in Waiting for Godot. One example is the meaningless of each day. With the lack of memory, none of the characters can recall the events of yesterday. Thus, Vladamir and Estragon live out the same day, over and over, without even realizing it. They are always promised that Godot will come the next day, they always run into Pozzo and Lucky, and they always debate hanging themselves at the end of each day. To an extent, the previous days don't even mean anything to them.
Existentialism is the Philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of will. To an extent, this is the opposite of Nihilism. While Nihilists emphasize nothingness, Existentialists emphasize the ability to determine their own will. Existentialism applies to Waiting for Godot as each character has their own will, with their own intentions. Vladamir and Estragon love each other despite their conflict, so they aim to stay together and wait for Godot. Pozzo travels around with Lucky, who is binded to Pozzo.
Godot also emphasizes Absurdity. In an absurd atmosphere, man loses all control, logic breaks down, as man becomes a puppet to the world around them with eventually leads to silence. In Waiting for Godot, all reason is destroyed my the lack of memory of any of the characters. As the characters can't recall what happened the day before, Vladamir, Estragon, Pozzo and Lucky are bound to repeat the same events and thought processes day after day. All reason is replaced with thoughts and conversations of little merit and intellect. Eventually, there will just be silence.

Just another blog post
"The best literature mirrors societal concerns and applies directly to aspects of our personal lives"
Waiting for Godot provides an excellent example regarding this explication.
Societal concerns of Waiting for Godot:
- The belief of faith over reason. Both characters in this play wait for a character who hasn't even promised to show up himself. They blindly wait for someone without question. They just believe that he is going to show up.
- Perhaps we make too much of an effort to busy ourselves. You can see that, in this play, these characters are happy just being with each other, waiting for Godot. However, many more people in real life are too busy and don't appreciate what they already have.

The Human Condition
The Human Condition
By definition, condition means "The state of something in regarding to its quality, appearance, or working order". The human condition, by inference, means "The state of humanity regarding humanity's quality, appearance, and working order". By looking at these three elements, one can make an inference of the summary of Human Condition.
Human quality. I'll say that the human quality is based on the overall health of humanity. Physically, over 80% of the world's resources goes to 20% of the people. These people are doing fantastic, especially on the disease front. With biotechnology becoming the newest, most in-demand field, we're becoming better as of health. With these advances, we can hel out the other 80% of humanity. Overall, we're doing fantastic.
Human appearance. Our problem is hat we let those who perform wrong actions represent us. However, for every Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus, there are hundreds of thousands of people working toward the betterment of society. We look like we're all working for ourselves, but so many of us are working for the betterment of others.

Pressure
We are always pressured by outside forces. Pressure from outside forces often influences people to make decision they normally wouldn't even consider making. This pressure comes from society, and from other people. Several characters in "Raisin in the Sun" feel compelled to take actions that they normally wouldn't have taken.
Beneatha, Walter's sister, often feels pressure from her strict, christian family. While Beneatha wants to live an independent, feminist, liberal life, the members of her family emphasize familial hierarchy, and stick close to the ideals of Christianity. With such ideals in mind, Beneatha wants to date a man whom she can learn about her past heritage from; Asagai. Asagai is a charming African man from Nigeria, who still keeps his heritage at the core of his heart. However, Beneatha's family wants her to date George, a wealthy black man who attends college with Beneatha. George keeps money close to his heart, submitting himself to white culture to stay on top. Beneatha doesn't respect this, and thinks George is a "Fool". When Beneatha finally hears from her mother that she doesn't have to date a fool if she doesn't want, Beneatha finally feels understood, and sincerely thanks her mother for giving her support. Like many of the other characters, Beneatha feels pressured into performing certain actions to gain the support of her family.

Lonliness in Raisin in the Sun
Walter serves to be a truly lonely character. Walter dreams of success in the liquor business, but he doesn't receive support from his family. His family wants to use the money to pay for education, or make a down payment on the house. Also, as a man, his frustrations aren't understood by his fellow female family. Every character wants to use the money for a different purpose, but at least the other characters can relate to each other. His family calls Walter foolish for such an idea. In reality, Walter is simply misunderstood.

Man's oppresion of man
Hansberry once stated that the success of her book is the result of man's oppression against other men. The fact that her play became so successful serves as proof that there is still oppression. Lorainne points out that because we are men, there are still oppressed people.
I agree with this statement. It is in our nature to suppress others for our own goals in life. In the end, we only do things for our own benefit. However, we can control the extent that oppression happens. Previously, as everyone knows, blacks remained widely suppressed for many centuries. Only recently have they really gained a chance for opportunity in America, and even then, we still judge blacks differently than we judge whites.
I feel that man's oppression of man is a result of man's dependency on other men. As humans, we work together to live the best lves that we can. Our parents raise us for eighteen years, farmers ship the food we need, barbers cut our hair, and the janitors help clean up after us. Conversely, we help out other men. We work for companies, thus helping out other people, and we get paid for it. Then, we invest this money in other products to pay other people. As men, we need the help and support of other men to thrive. However, many people feel they need to take advantage of those dependent on you, thus causing oppression.
As mentioned before, Oppression will always exist, but we can change he extent that others are oppressed in this world.

Elements of my immediate circle
What unsettles me? What will I assign to myself?
I'm gonna go ahead on a trangent and say that people who complain about small things irritates me. I constantly hear students complaining and throwing negative comments toward another person or thing. They say things like "Oh, she didn't wear her wedding ring today, she must be a bad wife", or "I can't stand this musician". Regarding the Superbowl, many of us said that this was the "Worst Superbowl ever". Another said "Bad Refs, Bad Commercials, Bad game, bad everything. I'm convinced that everything Fox broadcasts is a lie". It angers me because, in my honest opinion, these things don't mean too much. In my personal opinion, it was a good game, and the referees made every call they needed to make. There was no right to complain about these issues.
We also complain about humanity in general, about what people say about other people. We just had a thirty minute discussion regarding our judgement toward other schools and people. My question is, why the negativity? Why not focus on what we have going for us as a society? As a middle class student going to Bishop Kearney who lives in Webster, I'm very privileged to have what I have, and I try to stay positive all the time. In my opinion, if you give negativity to something or someone you should expect negativity back.
On a tangent this doesn't mean that complaining is bad. Complaining and criticizing is actually a helpful tool that many use the wrong way. Instead of saying "You're terrible at shooting", try saying "Use your legs more while you shoot to put more power in your shot". Pointing out a problem without a solution does nothing for an issue. For us to advance as a society, we have to work at the individual level, preaching constructive criticism over blatant negativity.

Another reflection blog
I'll go about this journal as a list:
AP Lit, most liked:
- I like how this class doesn't focus on just grammar, or how something is written, or how something is supposed to be written. This class focuses more on how we interpret the literature and other core ideals, rather than how we are supposed to interpret it. We don't need to worry about going on spark notes to make sure we're right, or to be hesitant about our opinion because we may be wrong. We can just say however we feel about a certain subject or issue. The slam poems are also a fantastic idea.
AP Lit: most disliked:
- Sometimes I just don't look at a piece of literature as deeply as others seem to interpret it. I mean, it's not a bad thing, but sometimes i feel like i'm not picking up on some observations that other people pick up on. I'll try to work on this during the second semester, of course.
School, Overall:
- I'm very satisfied with how school is going. I'm upset that I won't be able to play lacrosse this year, but other than that, Kearney has done a great job introducing me to new subjects, new people, new philosophies, and new ways of thinking. Kearney has really helped me learn to challenge what people say, rather than just accepting it right off the bat. I'm very appreciative of all the friends I've made at Kearney, and all the teachers who have taught me over the years.
Socially, overall:
- I feel like I'm starting to discover who I really am. I've made new friends, i've lost a few, and I hope to repair a few friendships that need mending. Now I feel like I know the proper path of approach. I like how i've developed, and my current path in life.

Mad World- Gary Jules
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what's my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world, mad world
Mad world mad world
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world, mad world
Mad world mad world
This song strongly depicts transcendentalist ideals. Jules reflects on the monotony of the world. To him, the world is just a repeated cycle, repeated until we die. This analogy is especially reflected when he sings "When People run in circles its a very very Mad World.... Mad world..." and "Children waiting for the day they feel good. Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday". The way Jules says "Happy Birthday... Happy Birthday" he makes it sound like it's repetitive. He reflects on how it happens every year, acting like nothing changes between the years. He thinks that people run in the same circles, going through the same motions day in, and day out. To him, the world is just one giant cycle that he himself had to adapt to.
This song is very reflective of transcendentalist ideals. Emerson says several quotes that relate to this song, such as "We are always getting ready to live, but never living". This quote relates to the song, as according to Emerson, many people go through life preparing for the next day without truly taking in what their current day has for them. In the end, we'll eventually wonder where all the time went, regretting how we lived our lives. To life life to its fullest, we have to absorb everything our current day has to offer for us. Thoreau also spoke a relevant mesage: "It is not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?" This songs highly reflect this thought, as in Jules' song it seems that everyone is living their own world, preparing for the next day, keeping busy as they see fit. We all say we're busy, but are these causes really causes we should be busy about? This paradox creates such a world as jules depicts in "Mad World", where everyone is too busy with their own things to truly appreciate what life has to offer for us.

Emmerson and Thoreau Aphorisms
"We are always getting ready to live, but never living"
I take fancy to this quote. The quote is basically saying that all we do in life is prepare ourselves for a better life, while not focusing on the current life we are living. I feel that the educational system emphasizes this way of life. In Grade School, our sixth grade teacher told us that the point of grade school was to prepare you for middle school. In middle school, we were told to prepare for high school. In High School, we were told to prepare for college. I imagine in college, we will be focusing on where we can get a job. Then, when we get a job, we receive enough income to generate a decent style of living, and to prepare for retirement. When we retire, we just use up this saved money and prepare for death. If people are so focused on the future, they won't be able to fully absorb how beautiful life is as they live it.
"Men have become tools of their tools"
This quote states that men have basically become victim to their own system. Originally, we created a system to keep everything balanced. Now, we are told to live by the system's rules, prejudices and practices. As we grow up, we are told to go into college, to get a job, to pay our taxes and to retire. It almost feels like a predestined path. I feel that in order to truly embrace life, we have to break through these man-made systems and experience the world for what it truly is.
